A conceptual framework to evaluate human-wildlife interactions within coupled human and natural systems Ecology and Society

Landscape characteristics affect human-wildlife interactions. However, there is a need to better understand mechanisms that drive those interactions, particularly feedbacks that exist between wildlife-related impacts, human reaction to and behavior as a result of those impacts, and how land use and landscape characteristics may influence those components within coupled human and natural systems. Current conceptual models of human-wildlife interactions often focus on species population size as the independent variable driving those interactions. Such an approach potentially overlooks important feedbacks among and drivers of human-wildlife interactions that result from mere wildlife presence versus absence. ABSTRACT Poultry farms in Central Argentina are often infested by Mus musculus L., despite the regular application of the rodenticide bromadiolone. This failure may be explained by the consumption pattern of mice, which may prefer alternative foods available on the farms to bromadiolone baits. Here we examine the consumption pattern of bromadiolone in the presence of wheat by M. musculus infesting poultry farms compared with the laboratory CF1 mouse strain. Overall, the poultry farm mice had longer survival and lower total food consumption in comparison with the CF1 mice. Los estudios relacionados con el control químico de la rata algodonera o cañera son escasos, por lo que es difícil tener acceso a la información. Desafortunadamente en México los rodenticidas se aplican con base en recomendaciones generales, por lo que es importante evaluar la efectividad de estos productos en condiciones controladas y de campo. El objetivo en este trabajo fue conocer la efectividad biológica de los rodenticidas: warfarina®, difacinona®, brodifacum®, flocumafen®, bromadiolona® y fosfuro de zinc® a través del consumo y la susceptibilidad de Sigmodon hispidus en caña de azúcar. The relationship between anticoagulant rodenticides and the gene for vitamin K epoxide reductase has been extensively studied The significance of mutations in Vkorc1 on the degree of response to anticoagulants is controversial. The implication of the VKORC1 function in pest control drives the attention to a wide range of factors that may be influencing the resistance to rodenticides, an issue that will be discussed in this article. Anticoagulants are used as rodenticides as well as to improve human health. The interactions between VKORC1 and CYP4F18 (cytochrome P450) are complex.
